Look at the stars!
"Hey kids, look at the stars!" From the drivers seat, I glanced up at the rear view mirror, to gauge their response. Absent any noticeable reaction, I instead saw my three kids sitting shoulder to shoulder in the back seat of my jeep, bundled up with jackets and blankets that they had each brought from home. With the top down tonight, the cold fall air stung the top of my head where hair once grew. I can't say if genetics, my kids, or an anxious mind contributed most to my hair loss, but one thing was certain, the rush of wind coming over the front windshield was anything but warm.
On a whim tonight, Amber and I decided to take the kids downtown for dinner and ice cream. This is certainly not our normal Tuesday evening routine, which made the night that much more special and exciting for all of us. On the way home, I tried not to drive distracted by looking up at the night sky, but I couldn't help myself, it was beautiful. Leaving downtown, however I was somewhat inundated with the sights and sounds of campus life. Cars wizzing past, street lights flooding down light as we passed each light pole, headlights of oncoming traffic, it all collectively served to distract and minimize the view a bit of the stars above.
As we continued to drive west, into the familiarity of the suburbs, something happened...the number of the cars on the roadway decreased, the street lights were less frequent, the sounds quieted, and the stars above...well, they shone all the more brilliant and clear. It resonated with me as I pulled my frozen family into our neighborhood, that I was looking at the same sky the entire drive home, it was only my perspective and point of view that had changed.
Life is this way isn't it? The same God that created the Heavens and the Earth, including the beautiful stars I enjoyed tonight, is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. It's simply our perspective and point of view that changes. Our Father never does. Life often throws distractions at us, and we lose sight of His majesty. Like the lights and sounds of a bustling downtown, we can't focus on just how big, how amazing, and how awesome He truly is.
When the road ahead is clear and plenty of other people, places, and things have our attention, we don't realize how desperately and completely we need God. It's only in the darkness that we are shown the fullness and beauty of Him. In my life, when all is going well, and I'm selfishly and stupidly taking credit for my successes, I'm denying due credit where it belongs. However, when dark days are endured, then I see Him more clearly. Like the stars shining in the clear and cold fall night, God reminds me that He has never changed and never will.
Friends, if you are struggling this evening, step outside, feel the cold fall air fill your lungs, see the stars shinning above, and be filled with the Holy Spirit and comfort, that the God that designed the beauty around us, is never changing, never failing, and He loves you so very much.
Much Love, Adam
